PALERMO: Gps Tour to the Capo Market
|
|
...Dear Jaani...what a tour with the Gps Walking tours by Giorgio's House :o) You walked around 16 Km in a little bit more than 1 day...not too bad. I see you walked in the heart f the historical markets...thru the Capo Market and get the Massimo theatre...Situated in the present day Palazzo Reale-Monte di Pietà neighbourhood Il Capo Market Il Capo is one of Palermo's four main street markets and maybe the busiest. Another Important Market is the Ballarò Market.
Its Arabic origins are evident and it is well worth a visit. It's still a "soul neighborhood" which was built during the arab period. Pirats and people that made the slave trade, used to leave over there.
Very narrow streets where you'll pass thru hundreds small stands of meat, fish, vegetables.... People selling Sfincione (Sfincione is a thick Sicilian pizza, or more precisely a focaccia, topped with tomatoes, onions, a few anchovies and grated caciocavallo cheese) and tickets of a local lottery (the Riffa) . If you win the Riffa mostly you win food from the market and sometimes some money as well.
The Market of Capo is one of the main markets of Palermo. The other ones are: The Ballarò Market (maybe the most important one) the Vucciria, The Lattarini, The Calderai. With the Giorgio's House Gps Walking Tours you can easily make the tours of the markets for free and with zero risk to get lost :o)
the Capo market resisted to all attempts to modify it, from the building of a bigger market nearby in 1874 to the urban rearrangement of the Concezione neighborhood in 1935, and finally the 1943 bombings and the depopulation of the central neighborhoods of the city. Together with Ballarò, this market will help you imagining how life was in Saracen Palermo, with the most typical Palermitan smells, tastes, colors and voices.
