The Romans were followed by the Arabic Saracens in 827 A.D., who in turn gave way to the crusading Normans in 1072 A.D., the Germanic Holy Roman Empire in 1194 A.D., the French Angevins in 1266, and finally the Spanish house of Aragon in 1282, under whose control it passed into possession of the Spanish crown in 1479, where it would stay (despite a 5-year revolt begun in 1848) until the Italian Risorgimento (in 1860) and Sicily’s annexation to the Kingdom of Italy. Most recently, Palermo was taken by the World War II Allied Forces in 1943, but the Allies gave it back to post-war Italy, because you aren’t supposed to conquer cities anymore, just spread freedom.
